The Ultimate 3-Day Zhangjiajie Itinerary: A Local’s Guide
This is the route I’d recommend to a friend visiting Zhangjiajie for the first time.

If you’re coming to Zhangjiajie for the first time, 3 days and 2 nights is enough to see the main highlights — as long as you plan the order properly.
The two places you really want to focus on are Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan). They’re not in the same place, so the biggest mistake is trying to go back and forth between them.
This is the route I’d recommend to a friend visiting Zhangjiajie for the first time.
Quick Overview
- 3 days / 2 nights
- Day 1: Tianmen Mountain
- Day 2: Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain
- Day 3: Golden Whip Stream + departure
- Best for: First-time visitors who want the major sights without rushing
- Accommodation: 1 night near Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie city + 1 night near Wulingyuan Sign Gate.
🎟️ Before You Go: Book Your Tickets
This is one thing I would not leave until the last minute, especially if you're visiting during a busy period.
For normal peak season:
- Tianmen Mountain: Tickets are generally released 7 days in advance, so check the official WeChat account “Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area” around 8 PM and book as soon as your date opens.
- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: I recommend booking 7–10 days ahead through the “Zhangjiajie Yijiyou” mini-program, especially if you want a particular entry time.
If you're visiting during China’s National Day holiday (Oct 1–7):
Book as early as you can. Tianmen Mountain is usually the difficult one, so start checking availability well in advance. Don't wait until the last few days for the National Forest Park either.
If you can't get a ticket, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge or Huanglong Cave are reasonable backup options.
Day 1 – Tianmen Mountain
Arrive in Zhangjiajie → Tianmen Mountain → Stay in the City
If you're arriving by train, Zhangjiajie West Railway Station is the easiest starting point.
Tianmen Mountain is right in Zhangjiajie city, so I recommend staying near the Tianmen Mountain cable car station on your first night. There's no reason to go all the way to Wulingyuan after spending the afternoon on the mountain.
Choose Route B
For this itinerary, I'd choose Route B: bus up + cable car down.
You’ll take the shuttle bus up the famous 99 Bends road, visit Tianmen Cave, then continue up the mountain by escalator. On the way back, you'll take the cable car all the way down to the city.
The main highlights are:
- Tianmen Cave
- The mountain escalators
- West Glass Skywalk
- Guigu Plank Walk
- Tianmen Mountain summit
Allow around 4–5 hours for the main route.
Afterwards, check into your hotel and have dinner in the city.
If you still have energy, 72 Qilou Building is a fun place to see at night. Otherwise, I'd honestly just get some rest — tomorrow is the big hiking day.
For your first night, I recommend staying near Tianmen Mountain Cable Car Station.
Day 2 – Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Check out in the morning and head to Wulingyuan, which takes roughly 30–40 minutes from Zhangjiajie city.
For this night, stay near Wulingyuan Sign Gate (East Gate). This makes getting into the National Forest Park much easier the next morning.
8:00–8:30 AM – Enter the Park
Enter through Wulingyuan Sign Gate and take the park shuttle towards the Bailong Elevator.
Take the elevator up to Yuanjiajie.
Yuanjiajie
This is the area most people come to see — the dramatic sandstone pillars that made Zhangjiajie famous.
Don't miss:
- Southern Sky Pillar — often associated with the Avatar mountains
- First Bridge Under Heaven
- Mihun Terrace
Take your time here. The views are much better when you don't spend the whole morning standing in a queue.
Afternoon – Tianzi Mountain
Take the park shuttle to Tianzi Mountain.
Walk around Helong Park and see:
- Imperial Writing Brush Peaks
- Fairy Scattering Flowers
- The surrounding mountain views
Then take the Tianzi Mountain Cable Car down.
From there, take the park shuttle back towards Wulingyuan and return to your hotel.
Evening
You have two easy options:
Charming Xiangxi show if you want to see a traditional performance.
Or simply walk around Xibu Street, grab some local food and call it an early night.
After a full day in the mountains, I usually prefer the second option.
For your second night, stay near Wulingyuan Sign Gate. This will save you a lot of time the next morning.
Day 3 – Golden Whip Stream + Departure
A slower morning in the forest
If your train or flight isn't too early, start the morning at the South Gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
From there, walk the main section of Golden Whip Stream.
It's very different from Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Instead of being surrounded by huge viewpoints and crowds, you're walking through the valley along the stream, with cliffs rising on both sides.
The main walk takes around 2–3 hours, depending on how far you go.
You'll probably also meet some monkeys along the way.
🐒 One local warning
Don't carry food in your hands around the monkeys.
And definitely don't wave snacks or plastic bags around them.
They're very used to tourists — and they're not shy about grabbing things.
After Golden Whip Stream, collect your luggage and head to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station or the airport.
Golden Whip Stream or Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon?
If you're short on time and wondering which one to choose, they offer very different experiences:
Golden Whip Stream 🌿
Nature, hiking, streams and monkeys. It's quieter and more relaxed, and it's already included in your National Forest Park ticket.
More about the glass bridge, zipline and other activities. It's a better choice if you're looking for something more exciting.
For a 3-day trip, I'd personally choose Golden Whip Stream. After spending Day 2 around the famous mountain peaks of Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, the peaceful valley scenery gives you a completely different side of Zhangjiajie.
I wouldn't try to visit both on the same day. The extra transportation makes the schedule unnecessarily rushed.
A Few Things I’d Know Before Going
Wear proper shoes
You don't need serious hiking boots, but comfortable shoes with good grip are important. There are a lot of stairs, and the stone paths can be slippery after rain.
Bring rain protection
Zhangjiajie's mountain weather can change quickly. A small umbrella or lightweight rain jacket is worth carrying.
Don't overpack
You'll be changing accommodation between Zhangjiajie city and Wulingyuan, so keep your luggage manageable.
Bring your original passport
Your ticket is linked to the identity document you used when booking, so bring the same original passport with you.
Start early
If you can choose your entry time, earlier is better. You'll generally have a much easier time before the biggest tour groups arrive.
Why I Recommend This Route
The biggest advantage of this itinerary is that you're not wasting time travelling back and forth.
Day 1: Stay in Zhangjiajie city for Tianmen Mountain.
Day 2: Move to Wulingyuan and focus on the Avatar mountains.
Day 3: Explore Golden Whip Stream before leaving.
You get the three experiences Zhangjiajie is best known for — Tianmen Mountain, the dramatic sandstone peaks of Wulingyuan, and the quieter forest scenery around Golden Whip Stream — without trying to squeeze every single attraction into three days.
And honestly, you don't need to. Zhangjiajie is much more enjoyable when you leave yourself a little time to actually stop and look around.
One final tip: ticket rules and release times can change, so always double-check the official booking platforms shortly before your trip.
Prefer a Private Tour?
If you don't want to deal with tickets, park transfers, and figuring out the best route yourself, I can help arrange a private Zhangjiajie trip with local English-speaking support.
